Obituary

Ruth Berneice Shanes, 87, of Memphis, Missouri, died June 10, 2014, at the Schuyler County Nursing Home in Queen City, Missouri. She was born in rural Hitt, Missouri, on August 14, 1926, to Virgil Benjamin and Mary Violet Fincher Peck. Berneice grew up in rural Scotland County in her early years and then with her mother and sister, moved to Memphis after her father passed away. She attended Memphis High School and was a graduate of the class of 1944. She worked at Hendrick's drugstore during her high school years. She married Hillis Thomson in July of 1946 at the Christian Church Parsonage and to this union a daughter, Brenda Kay, was born. Hillis passed away in 1963. Berneice married Robert E. Shanes on May 1, 1966, at the Christian Church in Memphis and to this union a daughter, Rose Mary, was born. Bob passed away in October, 2005. Berneice began working as a teller at Bank of Memphis on June 1, 1945 and was employed there for forty-five years. She was a member of the Memphis Christian Church and Christian Women Workers, a fifty year member of the Rebecca Lodge, a cancer drive volunteer and a member of the VFW Auxiliary. Berneice enjoyed doing yard work, making homemade noodles, broccoli casserole and holiday cooking for her family. She realized her greatest enjoyment when she could spend time with family and friends. Left to cherish her memory are her two daughters: Rose Mary Lumm and her husband, David, of Orlando, Florida; Brenda Wilson and her husband, Buddie, of Memphis, Missouri; five grandchildren: Ryan Lumm, Andrew Lumm, Katelyn Lumm, Dr. Pashia Groom and her husband, Dr. Kevin Groom, of Pensacola, Florida; Shane Wilson and his wife, April, of Memphis, Missouri and four great grandchildren: Hadley Groom, Calloway Groom, Ian Wilson and Ainsley Wilson. Also surviving are many cousins, nieces, a nephew and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husbands and a sister Ruby Aleen Mason.
