Auntie Clarice? The cookie lady? Mrs. Burns the dedicated maybe a little strict teacher or Grand Marshall of Memphis Antique Days 2009? The church member and committee leader for funeral dinners a loyal delivery woman for Meals On Wheels or the card player and partner also known to be a fan of crossword puzzles and have a passion for ice cream and a tendency to maybe drive a bit too fast? This lady of many facets of devotion and activity who lived most of her life in Memphis Missouri passed away November 3 2010 at the Scotland County Memorial Hospital in Memphis.Clarice was born December 28 1920 in Scotland County Missouri to Ozro Clyde and Hazel Alyene Sweeney Garrett. She attained her Bachelor of Science degree from Kirksville Teachers College at Kirksville Missouri in 1961.She married Leslie Paul Burns on April 17 1942 at Memphis Missouri and to this union two children were born. Paul preceded her in death on July 13 1999. She was also preceded in death by a son David Burns and a son-in-law Robert Hamilton.Her teaching career spans over thirty years beginning at a country school in Edinburg Missouri and finishing at Scotland County R-1 Schools in Memphis in 1982. She was a member of the Memphis First Christian Church the Rutledge Order of Eastern Star #343 and a life member of the Scotland County Historical Society.Left to honor Clarices memory is a daughter Janet Hamilton and Glen Cowell of Arbela Missouri a daughter-in-law Judy Burns of Platte City Missouri ten grandchildren: Scarlett Hamilton and Jr. Keith Stacy Hamilton and Tony Harris Brandon Hamilton Derrick and Tia Hamilton T. J. Mathews Foster Burns and Leslie Sweet Laura and Joel Langton David Burns Carol Burns Adam Burns seven great grandchildren: Payton Gracie Danielle Gabriella Karli Garrett and Kwayde. Also surviving is a sister Florine Forrester a nephew Sterling and Elaine Forrester two nieces Angela and Scott Westhoff and Alisa and Jim Kigar three great-great nieces: Megan and Shelby Westhoff and Elsie Kigar and a great-great nephew Eli Kigar.Visitation will open after 10:00 A.M. Friday November 5 2010 at the Memphis Funeral Home with the family present to greet friends and relatives from 6 until 8 P.M. Funeral services will be held on Saturday November 6 2010 at the Memphis Funeral Home with Pastor Sonny Smyser officiating. Music provided by Angela Megan and Shelby Westhoff. Burial will follow in the Memphis Cemetery with Clarices ten grandchildren serving as casket bearers.
