Donald Hugh Atterberry 75 of Memphis Missouri died Tuesday evening October 13 2009 while hunting in Knox County Missouri from an apparent heart attack. He was born November 12 1933 at Chatham Illinois to Jay McHugh and Verna Helen Rice Atterberry. Don graduated from Hillsboro High School Class of 1951. He worked several years as a bulldozer operator before entering the U. S. Army on January 14 1954 at St. Louis Missouri. He was a member of the 5th MP Co 5th INF DIV Cannoneer. He served during the Korean Conflict and was discharged December 30 1955. Don worked many years for GTE was a general manager and also served as a lobbyist for GTE in Jefferson City for eight years. He served as mayor for the city of Memphis for a two year term being sworn in on April 8 1992. He was an avid sportsman and golfer. He is survived a daughter Jennifer Pousson and husband James of Egan Louisiana a granddaughter Ashley Hebert and husband Aaron of Thibodaux Louisiana three sisters Verna Buerkett and husband Stu of Springfield Illinois Beverly Meyer and and husband Kenneth of Hillsboro Illinois and Nancy Miller of Springfield Illinois two brothers David Atterberry and wife Marla of Coffeen Illinois and Steve Atterberry and wife Roberta of Hillsboro Illinois.Don was preceded in death by his parents and two sons Gregory Atterberry and Lonnie Atterberry.Visitation will open at 9:00 AM Saturday with the family present to greet friends from 10 to 12 noon. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM with burial to follow in the Memphis Cemetery. Serving as casket bears David Atterberry Steve Atterberry Mike Gelbach Royce Cook Max Bruner and Wayne Winn. Military rites will be accorded by the Wallace W. Gillespie Memorial Post 4958 at the gravesite.As an expression of sympathy memorials may be given to the Scotland County Fire Department.
