Obituary

Donald L. Smith, 89, of Bloomfield, Iowa, passed away October 2, 2017, at the Davis County Hospital in Bloomfield.

He was born April 21, 1928, in Davis County, Iowa, to Glen O. and Nona (Kinsinger) Smith; the third of four children.

Don grew up in Davis County and was a member of the 1947 graduating class of Bloomfield High School. He served in the U.S. Navy from June 1948 through April, 1950..  He was married to Shirley Randolph on June 19, 1949, in Bloomfield and to this union three children were born.

He worked as a welder at the John Deere plant in Ottumwa, Iowa, for thirty-eight years and taught welding classes for several years. Following retirement from John Deere, Don became interested in woodworking and from his shop at his home in Bloomfield  had turned out many beautiful and practical pieces for many people.  He served on the Bloomfield City Council for two consecutive terms from 1998 until 2008.  Don spent many years as a U.A.W. union steward and member of the Davis County Democratic Central Committee.

Don was a member of the Bloomfield Christian Church.

Left to honor his memory are his three children: Sheila Westegard and her husband, Dan, of Bloomfield; Linda Smith of Bloomfield; Valerie Sparks and her husband, Dennis, of La Grange, Missouri; five grandchildren:  Amie King, Savina Lee Hernandez, David Walker, Laura Walker and Aaron Hardin.  Also surviving are four great grandchildren, a sister, Mildred Holt of Millington, Tennessee and many nieces and nephews.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and two brothers: Richard Smith and Dillon Smith.
