Obituary

Doris Madeline Atwater, 90 , of Memphis, Missouri, died March 21, 2015, at Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville, Missouri. She was born, July 13, 1924, at Etna, Missouri, to Charles Dye and Mabel Irene (Medus) Arnold. She attended Gorin High School, graduating with the class of 1941. Doris married Leasle Lewis "Johnnie" Atwater on April 3, 1943, in Colorado Springs, Colorado and to this union three children were born; Billie Lee, Phyllis Lynne and Merri Christina. "Johnnie" died October 15, 1971. Doris was united in marriage to "Bill" Atwater on October 29, 1994, at the Memphis United Methodist Church with Reverend Charles Hammack officiating. Doris first worked for Sheaffer Pen Company in Fort Madison, Iowa, then at Hy-Vee in Burlington, Iowa and later managed the Memphis Apartments for many years and was a devoted homemaker. She was a member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, The Cedar Grove Club, Memphis Red Hats and served on the board of the Scotland County Senior Nutrition Center. Doris was a member of the Gorin Christian Church. Doris will forever be remembered for her gracious smile, kind words and her selfless demeanor. For several years she visited with patients in the hospital and nursing home on a weekly basis. She and Bill enjoyed traveling, especially going south for the winter months. She is survived by her husband, Bill, of Memphis; two daughters: Phyllis George of Independence, Missouri and Merri Grogan and her husband, John, of Memphis; two step-sons: Gerald Atwater of East Galesburg, Illinois; Gregory Atwater and his wife, Ann, of Galesburg, Illinois; a step-daughter, Nancy Walter, of Bullhead City, Arizona; a step-daughter-in-law, Debra Atwater, of Galesburg, Illinois. Other survivors include seven grandchildren: Nicole Whittam, Todd (Paula) George, Chauntelle (Lonnie) Finch, Jesse (Laura) George, John (Angel) Grogan and Lauren (Jake) Brinkley; eight great grandchildren: Matthew, Timothy and Abigail George, Skylar Finch, Faithlyn and Rhiannon George, Gillian Grogan, Ali Brinkley, nieces, nephews and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister in infancy, two brothers: Richard Arnold and Donald Arnold; a son, Billie Lee Atwater, on July 1, 2011; her first husband, Johnnie and a step- son, William (Jr.) Atwater
