Osborn McCracken “Mackie” Johnston , 78, of Newark , Missouri , passed away Wednesday, August 19, 2015 , at the LaBelle Manor Care Center in LaBelle , Missouri .

Mackie was born on March 16, 1937 , in Newark , Missouri , the son of O.M. Johnston, Jr. and Catherine Caroline Bilyeu Johnston.

He attended the Newark Elementary School of Newark, Missouri, graduated from the Missouri Military Academy in Mexico , Missouri and continued his education with a football scholarship at Culver-Stockton College in Canton , Missouri . Mackie served his country in the United States Army before returning to northeast Missouri.

In the 1960’s and 70’s Mackie owned and operated the Johnston Implement Company in Lewistown, Missouri, selling John Deere. During this time he served Lewistown , Missouri as Mayor.

On January 17, 1981 , in Newark , Missouri , Mackie married Evelyn Wood and she was his constant companion.

Mackie was a member of the Newark Christian Church in Newark , Missouri , the Sumner American Legion Post in Sumner , Missouri , the LaBelle Masonic Lodge in LaBelle , Missouri , Scottish Rite Valley of Columbia, Missouri, Moila Shrine Temple of St. Joseph, Missouri and had been a member of the El Kadir Shrine Club of Kirksville, Missouri. He also served many years on the Newark Cemetery Association Board.

Mackie and Evelyn enjoyed spending winters in South Texas , he loved his John Deere Tractors, softball, baseball, including the St. Louis Cardinals, riding with the Buck-A-Roos, golfing, hunting, country western music, going to the State Fair and being a Democrat.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Johnston of Newark, Missouri; a daughter, Lori Lee and her husband Chris Walker of Shawnee, Kansas; a sister, Connie B. and her husband Jerry Davis of Petersburg, Illinois; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends, he never met a stranger.

Mackie was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 22, 2015 , at the Doss Funeral Home in Edina , Missouri .

Visitation will be after 2:00 p.m. Friday, August 21, 2015 , with the family greeting friends from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will be in the Newark Cemetery , in Newark , Missouri .

Officiating will be Pastor Charles Sharpe. Casket Bearers will be Ronnie Buswell, David Christie, Larry McKinney, Larry Court Simmons, Wade Goodson, David Bradley, Donnie Roberts, and Keith Tasco with Honorary Bears, Pudge Dodd, Bob Adair and Kenny McKenzie.
