Obituary

Mildred G. Spilman, 102, of Bloomfield, Iowa, passed away Friday evening, February 10, 2023, at the Bloomfield Care Center of Bloomfield, Iowa.

She was born on June 24, 1920, in rural Davis County, Iowa, the daughter of Forrest C. and Alice O. Baker Grant.

At the age of ten, Mildred moved with her family to Pulaski, Iowa, where she attended grade and high school.  She was a graduate of Pulaski High School, Class of 1938.  She attended Junior College in Bloomfield, Iowa, and also attended Northeast Missouri State Teachers College in Kirksville, Missouri for one term.  She taught for three years in rural schools in Davis County.

Mildred married Charles "Tubby" O. Spilman on June 16, 1940, in Lancaster, Missouri and to this union two children were born.

She lived in Bloomfield since her marriage.  She was a homemaker and did substitute teaching in the rural schools.  She was very active in the community having volunteered at the Davis County Welcome Center, Davis County Historical Society and was a charter member of the Davis County Community Hospital Auxiliary, serving as a "Pink Lady" until failing health ensued.  She was a past matron and 50-year member of Eastern Star, a member of Rebekah Lodge #1 of Bloomfield and served as Mother Advisor for the Bloomfield Assembly of the International Order of Rainbow for girls. Mildred was a member of the Bloomfield Christian Church where she taught Sunday school for a number of years.  She was also a very active member of the Christian Women's Fellowship until her health began to fail.  She was a member of the Bloomfield Country Club for many years and enjoyed playing golf.  Mildred was a charter member of several bridge clubs in Bloomfield and played regularly until failing eyesight prevented her from playing.  She was an avid "walker" and enjoyed gardening and sharing her produce with neighbors and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her son, Steven G. Spilman, her daughter, Nancy A. Childs, her son-in-law, Mike Childs and two brothers:  Jack Grant and Keith Grant.

Mildred is survived by two grandsons, Eric Childs of Phoenix, Arizona; Steve Childs and his wife, Monica, of Lee's Summit, Missouri; two great grandchildren; Caden Childs and Maci Childs.  Also surviving are nieces and nephews; Joe Grant and his wife, Julie, of Eldridge, Iowa, Sue Ann Edgar and her husband, Ted, of Nuburgh, Indiana, Roger Grant and his wife, Arlys, of Columbia, Missouri, Judy Weddle of Gardinia, California; great nieces and nephews and a very special friend, Patty Albright, of Centerville, Iowa.

Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 15, 2023, at the Bloomfield Christian Church in Bloomfield, Iowa.

Visitation will also be Wednesday, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the church.

Interment will be in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Bloomfield, Iowa.

An expression of sympathy in memory of Mildred Spilman may be left to the Bloomfield Christian Church or the Davis County Dollars For Scholars. A Memorial may be left at or mailed to the Memphis Funeral Home, 378 S. Market Street, Memphis, Missouri 63555.
