Minnie Louise Sykes, 94, formerly of Kirksville, Missouri, passed away peacefully on July 30, 2026, at the Knox County Nursing Home, surrounded by the love of her family.

    Minnie was born on April 10, 1932, near Mt. Carroll, Illinois, to Leroy and Evelyn (Theobald) Fast. She was the last surviving child of eleven children.

    As a young woman, Minnie moved to Hurdland, Missouri, where her Uncle Jim Fast took pride in helping her raise her only child, Sandy. She later made Kirksville her home, where she spent many happy years. Minnie worked at Hollister Incorporated, retiring after 25 years, taking many long-lasting friendships with her.

    One of Minnie’s greatest joys was her daughter, Sandy. Sharing the same April 10th birthday made their mother-daughter bond even more special and gave them a lifetime of birthdays celebrated together. In 1979, she married Carlile Sykes. Their time together was brief but cherished until his passing in 1983.

    Minnie found joy in the simple things that made a house a home. She had boxes full of the kids’ artwork and hung their homemade crafts all over the house. She was known for making the best homemade pies and noodles, tending her beautiful flowers, and spending countless hours reading books while sitting on her front porch. Throughout her later years, she was rarely without a small dog by her side. Her beloved Molly was her most recent companion. Every day, rain or shine, she was out walking her dog.

    Family was the center of Minnie’s life. With only two grandchildren, Charity and Jason, she devoted herself to creating treasured memories with them. Nearly every Sunday was spent taking them swimming, shopping, or out to eat, building a bond they would carry with them forever.

    Minnie was especially proud to witness five generations of her family. Her most recent blessing was meeting her great-great-grandson, Kross Lee Richmond, in April of this year.

    She is survived by her daughter, Sandy Frye Barnhill of Baring, Missouri; her grandchildren, Charity Miller and husband Patrick of Memphis, Missouri, and Jason Barnhill and wife Becky of Edina, Missouri; her great-grandchildren, Cailey Winstead of Brashear, Missouri, Paige Richmond and husband Kade of Memphis, Missouri; Saylor Barnhill and Jett Barnhill, both at home, and her great-great-grandson, Kross Richmond.

    For more than 40 years, Jim and Nora Gates and their children, who lived across the street from Minnie in Kirksville, became like a second family to her. Their friendship and kindness brought her much comfort and joy throughout the years.

    Minnie was also a member of the Faith Baptist Church in Kirksville. She loved walking to church, and it meant the world to her when the neighborhood children walked her home.

    She was preceded in death by her parents, Leroy and Evelyn Fast; all ten of her siblings; her husband, Carlile Sykes; her son-in-law, Casey Barnhill; her great-granddaughter, Sawyer Barnhill; and her grandson-in-law, Tim Winstead.

    To everyone who knew her, Minnie was simply sweet— a true representation of a sweet little old lady in the most endearing way. She had a gentle presence that made people feel comfortable and cared for, and her kindness left a lasting impression on all who met her.

    Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at the Doss Funeral Home in Edina, Missouri.

    The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 4, 2026, until service time at the funeral home.

    Interment will be in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Hurdland, Missouri.

    Pastor Brandon Rhea will officiate and music will be provided by Saylor Barnhill. Casket Bearers will be Jason Barnhill, Charity Miller, Saylor Barnhill, Jett Barnhill, Cailey Winstead, and Paige Richmond.
