Richard Duane Smitty Smith 78 of Bloomfield Iowa died Friday morning March 19 2010 at his home in Bloomfield.He was born October 31 1931 near Wayland Iowa. Smitty graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School Class of 1950. He was a member of the Iowa National Guard for nine years and worked as a lineman for the Mt. Pleasant Telephone Company for six and a half years. In August 1957 he graduated from the Iowa Highway Patrol Academy and served as an Iowa State Trooper in southeast Iowa until his retirement in 1987.He married Sharon Kay Coop May 27 1956 at the Antioch Church in Jefferson County Iowa. To this union four children were born.Smitty served on the Davis County School Board. He was a member of the Bloomfield City Council the Iowa Troopers Association and was a volunteer for the Lords Cupboard in Bloomfield. He was preceded in death by his mother Ruth Gholson and a half- brother Ronald Gholson.He is survived by his wife Sharon of 53 years three sons: Rick Smith of Centerville Iowa Kent Smith and his wife Michelle of Oskaloosa Iowa Lafe Smith and his wife Melissa of Owatonna Minnesota a daughter Susan Johnson and her husband Todd of Olds Iowa and six grandchildren: Caden Smith Ramsey Smith Emily Johnson Leah Johnson Liam Smith and Maren Smith.Visitation will be held at the Bloomfield Christian Church from 10 A.M. to 12 noon Saturday March 27 2010. Memorial services will be held at 1:30 P.M. with Reverend Chuck Ahleman officiating. Music will be provided by Beth Gravett soloist and Karen Spargur accompanist.A private burial of cremains will be held in Antioch Cemetery in Jefferson County Iowa.
