Obituary

Ruth Esther Slayton, 95, of Bloomfield, Iowa formerly of Memphis, Missouri passed away Saturday, August 31, 2024 at the Davis County Hospital in Bloomfield, Iowa.

She was born November 4, 1928, in Peoria, Illinois the daughter of Ora Elmer and Esther Ziemer Lowe.

On July 8, 1950 in Peoria, Illinois she married Edward A. Slayton and to this union four children were born.

Ruth graduated from Cuba High School in Cuba, Illinois in the class of 1946, they moved to Missouri in 1958 where they developed a successful farm that is still in the family to this day. She lived in Kirksville, Missouri before moving to West Lafayette, Indiana where she worked at Purdue University before retiring in 1997, she then moved to Boonville, Missouri where she worked with planning and zoning and University Extension and returned to Memphis, Missouri in 2013.

She enjoyed traveling, music, nature and her trips to Estes Park, Colorado, but most of all she loved spending time with her family and grandchildren. She was an avid Nascar and St. Louis Cardinal fan and was known to her family as being very competitive.

Ruth is survived by four children; Timothy Lee Slayton and wife Barbara of Downing, Missouri, Tina Marie Vangilder and husband Larry of Columbia, Missouri, Joan Suzanne Morris and husband Steve of Memphis, Missouri, and Joseph Ray Slayton and wife Peggy of Downing, Missouri; one sister, Jane Millard of Mapleton, Illinois; seven grandchildren; Nick Slayton and wife Briley, Trevor Slayton (Kelly), Jesse Vangilder, Shaina Van Remus and husband Micah, Seth Slayton (Alicia), Ryan Slayton, and Adam Slayton (Lily); and one great grandchild; Tripp Slayton; along with numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Ora and Esther Lowe; two brothers, Wayne Lowe and Dean Lowe; a sister, Marilyn Bartlett; one sister-in-law, Carroll Lowe; and two brothers-in-law, Frank Bartlett and Ronald Millard.

Funeral Services will be Friday, September 6, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at the Memphis Funeral Home in Memphis, Missouri.

Visitation will be Friday, September 6, 2024 one hour prior to service time at the Memphis Funeral Home.

Casket bearers will be Ruth's Grandchildren.

Interment will be at the Brock Cemetery.

An expression of sympathy in memory of Ruth Slayton may be left to the Salvation Army, Brock Cemetery or Bloomfield Care Center Activities.

A memorial may be left at or mailed to the Memphis Funeral Home 378 South Market Street Memphis, Missouri 63555.
