Sam Crawford, 99, of Columbia, Missouri and formerly of Memphis, Missouri, passed away Friday evening, June 5, 2015, at his home in Columbia. He was born May 10, 1916, near Crawford, Missouri, to Elbert Hamilton and Nora Alice (Smith) Crawford. Sam attended Cox and Prairie View country schools in Scotland County through the eighth grade. He served four years in the U. S. Army during World War II with much of this time being spent in the Aleutian Islands and received an honorable discharge in 1945. He married Ivalee Pearl Whittom on July 27, 1944, at the Auburn Park Methodist Church in Chicago, Illinois, with the Reverend Ivan T. O'Benshain officiating and to this union two children were born. Following his discharge from the service, Sam and Ivalee lived in the Chicago, Illinois, area until 1949 when they moved to a farm in Crawford, Missouri, where he worked for Harley Kerr and in the 1950's he worked for Kerr Grain and Seed Company in Memphis. They moved to Memphis, Missouri in 1960 and for the past ten years have lived with their daughter in Columbia, Missouri. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Memphis. Sam was a devoted husband and father. He loved the outdoors; particularly watching birds and squirrels and he enjoyed traveling. He also enjoyed going to auctions and collecting antiques. He had a passion for collecting weather vanes and lightening rods. Left to cherish Sam's memory is his wife, Ivalee, of Columbia, Missouri; a daughter, Connie Lee Crawford, of Columbia, Missouri and a son, Samuel Keith Crawford, of Phoenix, Arizona. Also surviving are two sisters: Lucille Winkelman and Edith Gordon and her husband, Robert, all of Huntley, Illinois and a sister-in-law, Mary Belle Moffett of Columbia, Missouri and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Nellie Lowder, two brothers: Earl T. Crawford and William "Frank" Crawford and a grandson, Rodney Keith Crawford.
