Shirley Jean Stevenson, 88, of Kansas City, Missouri, formerly of Edina, Missouri, passed away January 4, 2020, surrounded by her six children, their spouses, a few grandchildren and her lifelong best friend by her side. Shirley was born on May 11, 1931, in Brookfield, Missouri, the daughter of Eugene and Carmen "Marjorie" Roloff Bagley. She attended the Brookfield Immaculate Conception School and graduate from the Brookfield High School in the Class of 1949. Her family moved to Ft. Madison, Iowa with the rail road and Shirley met Donald. On March 29, 1952, in Ft. Madison, Iowa, Shirley married Donald Louis Stevenson. After they were married and his military service, they moved to farm southeast of Edina, Missouri to raise their family. She worked as a bookkeeper for CO-OP and in her spare time was a farm wife and raised six kids. Shirley was a member of The St. Joseph Catholic Church in Edina, Missouri, St. Ann's, Culture Club, Knights of Columbus Auxiliary, Lah-D-Dah Red Hat Club and Wexford Place Ladies. She moved to Kirksville, Missouri in 1994 and later to Kansas City, Missouri, in 2000, to be close to her family. She is survived by six children, Sharon King of St. Charles, Missouri, Brian and Melinda Stevenson , Pat White , Kathy and Rick Turpin, and Paul and Michelle Stevenson all of Weatherby Lake, Missouri, and Gary and Janet Stevenson of Memphis, Tennessee. Shirley also had eleven grandchildren and two great grandchildren, whom she loved dearly; Jason and Megan King, Meredith "Jean" and Alex Loman, Matthew and Uyen Stevenson, Jennifer and Joe Holley, Andrew Turpin, Lesley "Carmen" Stevenson, Paul R. Stevenson, Jack Stevenson, Zach and Madison Stevenson, Delaney Stevenson and Patrick Stevenson; her great grandchildren are, Lucy and Margot King; and a sister, Barbara Easley of Iowa City, Iowa.. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gene and Margie Bagley; husband, Donald; and grandson, Graham Paul Stevenson, son of Paul and Michelle; and a brother, Richard Bagley. Just for context, Mom's father Gene Bagley was born in 1911 in a one room Settlers Shack in Western Okl. Her mother Carmen, "Margie", was born in the Bronx, New York and went immediately to an orphanage. At a young age, Carmen was put on an Orphan Train headed to Brookfield, Mo. When she arrived, her new family changed her name to Marjory. Gene and Margie were married just short of 80 years and died two weeks apart. Mom was born in the depths of the depression in 1931, came of age during WW2, saw the Cold War, Vietnam War, and saw her grandson Jason fight in the Gulf War. Of mom's six children, all six graduated from college, three have advanced degrees and one has a PhD. Her son Paul rose to be a Captain in the Air Force serving with Distinction. She has a daughter Pat that has beaten back the ravages of Type 1 Diabetes for over 50 years. I am the slacker of the group. Mom always told me that she felt like the luckiest person in the world to have such great Daughters and Sons in law. She was a big fan. Mom was a great Sports Fan. She seldom missed a Cardinal game going way back to the days of Dizzy Dean, Enos Slaughter, Stan Musial, Bob Gibson, Ozzy Smith and the entire Cardinal gang. I was introduced to the Cardinals while sitting on the back porch listening to Harry Carrey with Jack Buck doing the play by play and my mom adding color. She NEVER wavered on her support of the Cards, a habit that was encouraged by her son in law sidekick fan, Rick Turpin. Mom may be in the running for attending the most Knox County Eagles sports events by a parent. From 1968 to 1982 mom had a player on an Eagle Team. She watched all of us play even if it was inconvenient. She saw an Eagle state Women's basketball Championship and she saw an Eagle football team play at states. Nice run there, don't you think? Mom was a big fan of the Mizzou Women and Men's basketball teams. She cheered on the Tigers wherever and whenever they played. Four of her children and three of her grandchildren have degrees from Mizzou. I should also say she was a fan of whatever team Coach Turpin was managing or playing on, no matter where. Finally she did have a devotion to the KC Chiefs. Trust me when I say this, Mom has more Sweatshirts for More Sports Teams than anyone I know. Her son Gary and his wife Janet have contributed to that ailment. She has a full set of Notre Dame gear where two of her grandchildren graduated. Mom juggled a career as a Bookkeeper for the Coop, raised 6 kids and was a farm wife here in Edina. After that, she moved first to Kirksville and then down to be near her WL families in Kansas City. Life was not always easy for Mom, but she persevered, even in difficult times. She was a big fan of Florida and visited Pat and Tony White there whenever she could, buddy in tow. She was also a big fan of going to see Gary and Janet in Memphis. These visits really mattered. Mom had a good life filled with good times with Family and Friends. It is not often that friendships last a lifetime, but her friendship with two people were life enduring, that of Margaret Parrish (Deceased) and Diane O'Connel. Diane and Mom were friends since they were 6 years old. When I say friends, they were real friends. Diane was by Mom's side at her death. So to the folks here, Look, a lot of people go through life just watching. Mom went through life experiencing. She did it with gusto, with Great Friends, and a Family that loved her. Oh, I forgot to mention, and this is important, Mom fancied herself as a Feminist long before it was "popular" to be a feminist. She passed that on to whoever was willing to listen and learn. Know this, Shirley Jean Bagley Stevenson did not get cheated!! She went out with her Spikes On charging to Home Plate. We, the Stevenson Family wish you all a Great Journey through this life. May it be said about us, we did not get cheated!! A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, January 11, 2020 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Edina, Missouri. The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. till service time Saturday, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Edina, Missouri. Interment will be in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Edina, Missouri. Father Mike Coleman will officiate, and Jim and Kyle Clark will provide music. An expression of sympathy in memory of Shirley Stevenson may be left to the Knox County Adopt a Child Fund.
