Vernon Walter Humphreys, 97, of Bloomfield, Iowa, died Wednesday, February 22, 2017, at the Bloomfield Care Center.

He was born January 18, 1920, at Hedrick, Iowa, to Harvey Hillis and Ollie (Noel) Humphreys. The family moved to Davis County in 1933.

He was married to Betty LaRue Bullock on June 28, 1941, at Lancaster, Missouri and to this union four children were born.

Vernon served for three and one-half years with the United States Navy during WWII, being honorably discharged in October, 1945, and moving his family back to Bloomfield.

Vernon worked as an agent for the Standard Oil Company, operating a bulk plant and driving a tank wagon in Davis County until his retirement in 1976. He was the sexton of the Bloomfield I.O.O.F. Cemetery for many years before and after retirement.

He was a member of the American Legion Reed-Whisler Post #78, serving on the military honors squad for fifty-two years. He was a past member of the V.F.W. #8880 and the Davis County I.O.O.F. #23. Vernon was a member of the Bloomfield Christian Church, serving on many committees and in several capacities.

Left to honor his memory is his son, Jedd Humphreys, of Bloomfield, and two daughters: Marilyn Leon of Bloomfield and Virginia "Ginny" Gieseke and her husband, Jim, of Des Moines, Iowa. Other survivors include two sisters, Nina Forsythe and Eva Adams, both of Bloomfield, four grandchildren, Julie (John) Kauzlarich, Tracy (Debbie) Murphy, Aaron (Becky) Murphy and Jim Morrison; six great-grandchildren: Jacob, Sara, Jackson, Matthew and Meghan Murphy, Victoria Forbord and Tabitha Morrison and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a daughter, Rita LaRue White; a grandson, Wesley J. White; four great-grandchildren: James Morrison, Destiny Morrison, Eden Morrison and Whitney Mathias; two brothers: H. Harold Humphreys and Nolen Humphreys and five sisters: Violet Hull, Cynthia Rupe, Doris Meyers, Olive Jones and Muriel Martello.
