Wilma June Kapfer, 92, of Memphis, Missouri, died September 19, 2015, under the care of Hospice, at Good Samaritan Home in Quincy, Illinois. She was born, a twin, on July 1, 1923, near Arbela, Missouri, the daughter of Willis Newton and Drusie Pearl (Riebel) Adams. She was raised near Arbela, attending the Morning View country school for eight years and Memphis High School, graduating in 1941. Upon graduation, she and two close friends attended the St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in Keokuk, Iowa, for three years, graduating in June, 1945. She also spent three months in pediatrics training at Detroit, Michigan. In her third year of training, during World War II, she volunteered as a member of the United States Army Cadet Corp. On March 24, 1946, Wilma June was married to Dee Verne Kapfer at the Christian Church parsonage in Memphis, Missouri and to this union four children were born: three daughters and a son. After the birth of their children, she worked as a registered nurse at the Davis County Hospital and the Gilfillan Clinic in Bloomfield, Iowa. Later she worked at the Scotland County Hospital and Nursing Home as the Director of Nurses. She was also employed at the Scotland County Health Department and spent six years as a staff nurse at the Scotland County Care Center. Wilma June also worked for several years at Memphis Funeral Home. Wilma June was a charter member of the Scotland County Historical Society and Genealogical Society. She was also a charter member of V.F.W. #4958 Auxiliary post. She was a past member of the Business & Professional Women's Club, Carter Chapter #107 Order of the Eastern Star, the Memphis Study Club and was a founding member of the local group of Memphis Red Hats. She was a member of the First Baptist Church. She was extremely interested in genealogy, her family and ancestors. She has compiled over forty-five scrapbooks with pictures, obituaries, weddings and births of her families and a family tree with pictures dating back to 1700's that traces family from Ireland, England and Germany. Wilma June especially loved flowers and enjoyed working in her yard as long as she was able. She also enjoyed and collected antiques, attending many flea markets, auctions and other venues related to antiques. Later in life when she retired from nursing, she opened an Antique Shop in her Main Street home where she enjoyed meeting and talking to others. She also loved to play cards, travel and had been to Europe twice, visiting the places her ancestors had lived and worked before they came to America. Wilma June spent thirty plus years serving as chairman and curator of the Downing House Museum and Complex in Memphis. She volunteered many hours each year to oversee the museum and volunteers, displays, yards and flowers. A special project of hers was the summer kitchen where she could show and tell children and adult visitors how the meals were prepared when the Downing family lived there. Left to cherish her memory are four children: Carol Alexander-Plenge and her husband, Robert, of Brandenton, Florida; Judy (Moore) Piper and her husband, Tom, of Pittsfield, Illinois; Susan Humphrey and her husband, Robert, of Quincy, Illinois and John Kapfer of Hannibal, Missouri; nine grandchildren: Jeffry Alexander and his wife, Sandi; Jay Alexander and his wife, Shayne; Brandon Moore and his wife, Hope; Jennifer (Humphrey) Miller and her husband, Matt; Meredith Humphrey; Lindsey (Piper) Wagner and her husband, Darren; Grant Piper; Kourtney Kapfer and Kollin Kapfer. Also surviving are fourteen great grandchildren: Schae Moore, Brock Moore, Brynne Moore, Paityn Alexander, Ava Alexander, Harper Alexander, Jack Alexander. Ashley Alexander, Zachary Alexander, Brielle Vincent, Bradyn Vincent, Kassius Miller; Adalyn Wagner and Ayden Wagner; a niece, Patty Van Dyke and a nephew, Jerry Adams. Mrs. Kapfer was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her twin brother, Willis Jr. Adams and two sons-in-law: Charles Thomas Moore and Lenn Alexander.
